The largest undertaking being done by those involved with Community Service Day is the hotly anticipated area where Heritage Park will sit. Over the recent weeks, pre work has already been completed thanks to volunteers from various organizations, but on Saturday, those young and old will be welcome to get their hands dirty and lend a hand when the 18 acre piece of land will be transformed into a place where families and all ages can sit, relax and learn about the rich history of Redlands.

Griesemer invited all groups in the community to participate, bringing with it leadership, knowledge of community needs, the relationships and contacts to find resources quickly.

Partnering with the city and city staff, the council was given a list of projects that would benefit Redlands. Once the ball started rolling, it didn't stop.
Originally, the Redlands Service Council was responsible for various tasks within the city, including keeping a calendar of events. More responsibilities were later added, including the contribution of resources and money to help the city with its infrastructure, said Griesemer.
proud of its efforts to keep itself a nice place to live," Griesemer said.
"Fire and police departments helped with safety and security during projects, Citizens Volunteer Patrol for road closures and alternative routes," she said.
"Parks, in general, play an important part of the ambiance to the city, making it more humane," said Griesemer, a past president of the council. "Having a park there makes sense, so it is nice that it is happening and that it is going to happen. "
Last year's Community Service Day involved 12 projects at 23 locations with an estimated 1,700 volunteers. The projects included work on the Redlands Theatre Festival Stage at Prospect Park and the baseball field at Orangewood High School, said Griesemer.
"We have more workers than we have tools," Frazier said last year.
To help make the effort a success, the city has provided resources to secure grant money, preparation of the projects, staff time to help with organizing projects, access to public grounds before and during projects, rolloffs and waived fees for dumping, Tabetha Wittenmyer, former volunteer coordinator for the city, told Service Council officials.
The council hopes projects set aside for the park which sits at Nevada and Orange avenues will be completed on Saturday, but additional ones are planned in the days to follow. Along with Heritage Park, volunteers will also work on the Barton House and the Asistencia. Both historic properties are adjacent to Heritage.
The council said Wittenmyer developed a relationship with the Home Depot Foundation, which has given the council more than $87,000 over the past four years to complete projects. Others have also stepped forward.
hub of resources that could take on significant projects around town, if needed.
Fire Station No. 263 on Pennsylvania Street also benefitted from last year's effort. Allan Collins, director of volunteerism at the Inland Empire United Way, headed the project. Volunteers included on and off duty firefighters, including Redlands Fire Chief Jeff Frazier, and volunteers from Cal State San Bernardino and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints in Redlands.
Since the re launch, the Service Council has been one of the many groups behind Community Service Day, where thousands of volunteers take up various projects within the city with the goal of completing them on one designated day.
