I learned in the past dozen years of coaching that relying on outdoor ice is foolish. Every year we wait and wait Omega Seamaster Green Bezel for the ice to freeze, then it be too cold (Hockey Manitoba rules don allow games or practices once the temperature dips below 25 C or a windchill of 28 C), then the ice melts. In that brief window, we might be lucky to get in three practices on our allocated night of the week.
At Terry Sawchuk Arena, the only tribute to the goaltending legend is a small plaque in the lobby. Surely the City can spring for a framed photo of Sawchuk to go over the plaque. A better example of how to honour someone can be found at Eric Coy Arena.
But the cold reality is outdoor rinks aren a viable option for minor hockey teams today. Every now and then we get a photo that has no news value, but it still too good to pass up.
cold reality check
I had teams in week long outdoor tournaments where it been both too cold and too mild to play within the seven days of the event.
Unlike back in their day, there are now far more clubs competing for ice. Not only are there more boys teams, you also have to factor in ringette, an ever growing number of female teams and leagues and more men rec squads that all want their share.
