Money is the least of Newsom's problems, said Thad Kousser, a fellow at the Hoover Institute.
"I could see in a general election if it looks like Republicans may win and you can make the pitch that it's crucial because of redistricting," Pitney said. "But it'll be hard to make that pitch in a primary, especially with polls showing Brown in better shape."
SACRAMENTO They don't show the entire picture, but a paucity of large donations from San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's fundraiser headlined by former President Bill Clinton is raising more questions about whether Newsom has the ability to attract major contributors to his gubernatorial campaign.
"We are able to more aggressively raise money nationally partially due to the credibility conferred on the campaign by the Clinton endorsement," South wrote.
An earlier report of the Clinton event described about 300 "mostly young Hollywood movers and shakers" who turned out to the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles, driving through downtown Los Angeles in rush hour traffic on a weeknight to get there.

It was only the start of a more aggressive fundraising schedule, South said, that will yield more impressive hauls in coming days. This week, Newsom held fundraising events in Philadelphia, New York City and Dallas. "The political establishment knows Newsom," Kousser said. "It's not that his campaign isn't being taken seriously. It's just that it doesn't seem to be getting any traction outside of the Bay Area and the state views him largely as being associated with Prop. 8 (the opposition campaign to the anti gay marriage proposition). I just don't think people are picking him as the horse to ride."
"The whole basis of bringing Clinton in was that it would generate tremendous amount of money as well as Southern California Hollywood exposure," said Larry Gerston, political science professor at San Jose State University. "It's hard to imagine that it met the campaign's expectations."
Dating back to the Sept. 15 announcement that Clinton was throwing his support to him, Newsom has raised $140,900 in contributions of more than $5,000. In the same period, Attorney General Jerry Brown, who has not announced but is presumed to be running for governor, has raised $404,700 in contributions of more than $5,000. Overall, Brown had raised about double Newsom's contributions in the first half of the year, $3.5 million to $1.7 million.
"That probably was not the wisest use of his time," said Jack Pitney, government professor at Claremont McKenna College, who added that Newsom's national fundraising efforts may face some resistance from Democratic donors more concerned about curbing Republican congressional gains than getting in the middle of a gubernatorial primary.

Brown also has scheduled a major Hollywood fundraiser, Nov. 18, co hosted by DreamWorks founders Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen.
Garry South, Newsom's campaign adviser, dismissed the significance of the low totals, writing in an e mail response to questions that the event hadn't intended to raise big money. We thought it was actually going to be a fundraiser. They said Clinton would help. I'll give them high marks for a clever rationale. But, either you have money in the bank to wage a serious campaign or you don't."

Some questioned whether Newsom put enough effort into maximizing Clinton's clout before the fundraiser. Two days before the fundraiser, Newsom was in Dallas delivering the keynote address at the Dallas Human Rights Campaign's Annual Black Tie Dinner, a gay rights organization time that could have been used to call prospective donors.
