Any competition, however, constitutes a full season.

"A student athlete who is granted a hardship waiver may practice and/or participate in rehabilitative activities for the remainder of the season without using a season of participation," the bylaw states.
"It's an academic decision, too," Seidman said. "You have to be willing to come back for that fifth year."
At more competitive levels, when scholarships or even a possible career in the pros is at stake, the decision is easier, but at the lower level, those decisions can get costly.
Basketball standout Vanessa Bosques, who injured her knee and missed all of the 2011 12 season, graduated in the spring with a degree in sports management but is back at the school to take at least a year of business management graduate degree courses.

First, for a student athlete in Division III to earn an extra year of eligibility, the injury has to occur during the first half of the season. As NCAA bylaws state, "The injury or illness must have occurred before the beginning of the varsity contest or date of competition that starts the second half of the traditional season."
Athletes who get that extra year have a big decision to make, especially at the Division III level besides getting their bodies to recover from an injury, they have to decide whether they want to stay in school another year just to get back that lost athletic season.

A couple of injury cases at Daniel Webster show that students have been willing to stay an extra year to keep playing.
The student athlete has to be full time, and all of the necessary enrollment documentation has to be filed. Sometimes that documentation can take a while to track down, which is why meticulous records are kept.
Ali, complaining of a sore arm, was shut down for baseball by his physician last March. Now he has to document the diagnosis, lack of participation and his course schedule so he can obtain an injury waiver and be eligible to pitch in the spring.
A waiver giving an athlete another season doesn't mean he or she gets to go to school for free.
Seidman says the process usually takes less than a month.
First, the school applies to the conference commissioner on behalf of the athlete in the Eagles' case, it's Omega Watch Antique
