"This is one of our most innovative and spectacular college campus projects. The successful collaborative approach using the design build delivery method will hopefully influence other community colleges to utilize design build," said Rich Henry, president of McCarthy's Northern Pacific Division. "We knew this was a special project and are honored to see it get so much recognition."
Late last year, the design build project and its team of CSM, McCarthy, LPA and Rutherford Chekene received California Construction magazine's Best of 2007 Northern California Award of Merit."Without a doubt, this was a team effort and we're all proud to share this award with our project team," said CSM President Michael Claire. "We're proud of our Science Building and Planetarium and the exceptional learning environment they provide for our students and the community."
CSM's 58,000 square foot Science Building, funded by San Mateo County Measure C general obligation bond funds, opened for classes in the fall of 2006. Serving as the north entrance to campus, this flagship building represents the first major classroom construction project in more than 40 years. It features modern science classrooms and labs, and an observatory with a Omega Speedmaster 38 Mm
The CSM project was selected for the award among eight entries in its category, said Nancy Grimes, the executive director of DBIA's Western Pacific region. The competition attracted 37 entries overall in various categories that were judged by industry professionals such as principal engineers and capital program directors.
Representatives of McCarthy, which entered the project in the competition, received the award at a special ceremony in late May.
