Third parties have complained for years about the signature requirement, and in 2012, a federal judge in Nashville agreed it is too burdensome. Election officials are preparing for the likelihood that Greens and Constitutionalists will be allowed to run in November.
Representatives of the Green Party and Constitution Party say they will push to establish a foothold in Tennessee politics following years of battles in the courts and state legislature.
"It would remove any doubt about ballot access," said Darrell Castle, a Memphis attorney and former Constitution Party candidate. They would appear to have their best opportunity in decades to do so.
